What is Colocation Hosting

October 14th, 2009

We are thinking about getting into the colocation game, so here is a brief article we wrote up on the topic.

Some people in the hosting industry look at collocation as a dirty word? Why does collocation hosting have such a bad rap? Well, first let us take a look at what collocation hosting is really about.

At its core this means that the provisioning of space, bandwidth and power is controlled by a third-party data center. They do not control it all though. Most of the time, the web host who is using the third-party’s data center services will need to provide the management for the hardware or servers they are running from there.

To try to make sense of this, lets say I want to start a store. I go rent a building downtown that has all the shelves, cash registers, and shopping carts – however I have to stock the store myself and, of course, figure out a way to bring the customers in the door. Instead of spending money on buying the store and some of the basic necessities, I get to rent them – in turn bringing my overall costs down.

So, with it explained like that – where is the evil in it?

Well, many web hosting elite look down upon this practice because it is a money saving practice. It lowers the proverbial bar on the point of entry somebody has to become a web host too.

Since building a data center from the ground up is a very expensive and time consuming act, I see no problem in getting your hosting through collocation.

Free Hosting Design Templates

September 4th, 2009

It has been a while since I found any hosting freebies, but this one deserves the attention.

The folks over at ResellerGuide.com have got you covered if you are looking for a free design to get your hosting business off the ground. Just this past week they lanunched 12 free layouts for Web hosting companies. Some of them have multiple pages included and PSD files so that you can edit it and make it your own.
This could be a great helping hand for any small hosting company trying to get off the ground.

Free Templates
First impressions are everything, so having a good Web site layout is a nice start to building that relationship with your future clients as they browse through your links.
What is the only thing that they are asking for in return?
All that we ask is that you leave a review of the hosting company you are using and help the community with advice. Plus maybe you can link to us or email me with an article or idea for an article from time to time.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Check out all 12 designs and when they ask you who sent you to them, make sure that you let them know that FiniteMedia.com sent you there.

Free Hosting – Home to Hackers? No Way!

September 4th, 2009

Who would have thought it possible, hackers using free Web hosting solutions to get evil and twisted things out and onto the Internet. This article via the folks at WWWCoder really doesn’t bring me any new news. However these numbers are a little shocking.

In the first two weeks of July 2005 alone, Websense Security Labs has discovered more than 500 incidents of free web hosting sites that were created to spread key loggers, Trojan horse downloaders, Trojan horse droppers, and other harmful spyware and aware. Earlier this year, Websense reported that free blogging accounts were being used to harbor malcode – this trend is now expanding to any form of free web hosting site. The recently uncovered sites include those available for hosting online journals, photo albums, greeting cards, music, sports ‘fan’ pages and online scrapbooks, among many other popular purposes.

Now do you want the bad news? I bet you that the numbers are probably a lot bigger than 500, depending on how many Web hosts you are looking at. So have we seen the death of free hosting accounts? No. Right now free Web hosting is too big of a bargaining chip for Web hosting companies to just toss out with the trash. What we do need to see is better and smarter ways of dealing with the problems at hand.
